The basilica was built in 1986 to accommodate the growing local community. The mission was established by Saint Serra in 1776. The city’s mayor said the incident was “particularly sad for the Polish community, for which the monument is of great value.” The Polish 1st Armored Division, led by General Stanislaw Maczek, freed the city on Oct. 29, 1944. The city awarded Maczek honorary Dutch citizenship, and when he died in 1994, he was buried alongside the fallen soldiers at a cemetery in the city.
